Mobile Devices Now Drive 53% of Purchases as Shoppers Browse In-Store

Smartphones have evolved beyond checkout tools into decision-making hubs that shoppers use throughout the purchase journey, forcing retailers to rethink mobile strategy across operations.

Mobile Reaches Majority Share of Consumer Purchases

Shoppers now complete 53% of purchases using mobile devices, according to research from PYMNTS Intelligence and Visa Acceptance Solutions. The study, titled Global Digital Shopping Index: The AI-Powered Shopper Has Arrived, reveals that the shift extends far beyond the checkout screen.

Before completing a transaction, consumers rely on smartphones to discover items, evaluate prices, scan reviews, verify stock levels, redeem loyalty rewards, and process payments inside physical retail locations.

Smartphones Function as Retail's New Operating System

While merchants still structure operations around distinct channels — storefronts, websites, mobile apps, marketplaces, social platforms — customers navigate all of them interchangeably. The smartphone serves less as a standalone sales channel and more as a decision layer carrying product details, payment methods, rewards balances, and competitive pricing across every stage of shopping.

Physical stores have lost their traditional information monopoly. The retail floor now functions as one interface within a sprawling digital marketplace. Inconsistencies between online offers and in-store availability, inventory errors, or loyalty benefits that vanish at the register quickly push shoppers toward competitors.

Transaction Speed Demands Earlier Optimization

Mobile devices have conditioned shoppers to expect transactions at the moment they decide to buy. A streamlined payment button cannot compensate for poor product pages or unavailable inventory. Effective mobile optimization must therefore begin well before checkout.

Retailers need precise product information, authentic customer reviews, uniform promotional pricing, and transparent fulfillment choices. Each interaction either retains the shopper within the merchant's ecosystem or provides a reason to shop elsewhere.

Channels Dissolve Into Task Flows

Consumers organize shopping around tasks rather than channels: locate the product, assess its value, secure it conveniently, and pay safely. The smartphone orchestrates many of these tasks even when the final purchase happens through another touchpoint.

Rather than replacing physical stores, desktop computers, or sales staff, smartphones have absorbed elements of each. Mobile strategy can no longer reside exclusively within eCommerce teams — it now intersects merchandising, marketing, store operations, loyalty programs, technology infrastructure, fulfillment, and payments.

Backend Systems Enable Seamless Experiences

What appears to be a front-end design challenge is fundamentally a test of backend infrastructure. Seamless mobile experiences require connected inventory systems, unified customer identities, synchronized promotions, flexible fulfillment options, and payment mechanisms that function across all channels.

Merchants that treat payments as an isolated final step risk missing broader opportunities. When integrated correctly, payment systems can link customer identity, loyalty status, and fulfillment preferences, transforming checkout into the moment when the entire relationship coheres.

The 53% mobile share signals more than a shift in transaction location. It demonstrates that smartphones have become the primary environment where commerce is discovered, evaluated, and authorized — regardless of where the final sale is recorded.
