Stripe Targets AI Marketplace in $10 Billion Deal

The payments processor is negotiating to purchase OpenRouter, an artificial intelligence startup that operates a marketplace for AI models, according to reports from The Wall Street Journal. The potential transaction could value the company at approximately $10 billion.

A deal could be announced in the near term, though discussions remain fluid and other technology firms have also explored acquiring the startup. The exact purchase price under consideration has not been disclosed. The move would represent Stripe's most significant expansion beyond its core payments business.

Rapid Valuation Surge for Young Startup

OpenRouter was valued at $1.3 billion in May, according to PitchBook. A sale near $10 billion would mark a dramatic increase in just months. The company's backers include Menlo Ventures and CapitalG, the growth investment arm of Alphabet.

The startup provides software that enables customers to access AI models from providers including OpenAI and Anthropic, alongside open-weight alternatives that can be downloaded and deployed independently. The platform catalogs hundreds of large language models and allows developers to evaluate and alternate among them.

Strategic Fit With Stripe's AI Push

The acquisition aligns with Stripe's recent moves into AI infrastructure and stablecoin payment services. Enterprises increasingly seek access to multiple AI models to manage costs and avoid vendor lock-in with any single provider.

The two companies already maintain a commercial relationship, with OpenRouter relying on Stripe to process customer payments. Stripe's own valuation reached $159 billion earlier this year, giving it substantial financial capacity for large acquisitions.

Parallel Pursuit of PayPal Continues

The OpenRouter talks proceed alongside Stripe's pursuit of a far larger target. The company and private equity firm Advent International submitted a joint bid for PayPal valued at approximately $53 billion, offering $60.50 per share.

PayPal's board has deemed that offer inadequate, according to people familiar with the matter. Directors are evaluating factors including financing capability, regulatory approval timelines, and the combined scale of the two firms, which together process about $3.7 trillion annually. Stripe and Advent are backed by roughly $50 billion in committed bank financing and would hold equal stakes if the deal proceeds.

AI Infrastructure Opportunity

OpenRouter occupies a position in what The Wall Street Journal described as an emerging category of startups operating between AI developers and the enterprises that want to use their models. This intermediary layer addresses a growing need for model flexibility and cost optimisation.

The company's platform lets organisations compare performance and pricing across providers, switching between models as requirements and economics shift. That capability has become increasingly valuable as AI adoption accelerates and model options proliferate.
