Transkripcija

How does Apple Pay hide my card number when I tap?

You tapped your iPhone, you bought a coffee, the payment went through, but the café never received the card number printed on the back of your card.

How?

Apple Pay uses a substitute card number called a device account number.

It's linked to the card on that particular device.

Add the same card to your Apple Watch and the watch gets its own device account number for that card.

The number doesn't change with every purchase.

What changes is a one-time security code created for each payment.

It helps the bank verify that the payment came from your device.

And remember, it changes for each payment.

So copying the payment details doesn't give someone a reusable card.

That also explains why the last four digits on the receipt can look different from your physical card.

Returning something? The shop may need to know those Apple Pay digits, especially the last four.

You can find them in the card details in your device's wallet.

Apie šį epizodą

You tap your iPhone, you buy a coffee, and the payment goes through. Yet the café never received the card number printed on your card. Something else was sent in its place.

Apple Pay uses a substitute card number called a device account number. It's linked to your card on that particular device, so if you add the same card to your Apple Watch, the watch gets a device account number of its own. That number doesn't change with every purchase. What changes is a one-time security code created for each payment, which helps the bank verify that the payment really came from your device.

Because that code is new every time, copying the payment details doesn't give anyone a reusable card. It also explains why the last four digits on a receipt can look different from the ones on your physical card. If you return something, the shop may need those Apple Pay digits — you'll find them in the card details in your device's wallet.
