New Virtual Card Features for Corporate Clients
American Express is giving its US commercial customers new ways to create and manage virtual cards as demand grows for digital payment methods in business spending.
The card issuer is adding virtual card functionality to its @ Work platform, the tool Corporate Programme customers already use to oversee employee spending, submit card applications, and generate reports. The platform also integrates with enterprise resource planning and expense management systems.
By embedding virtual cards directly into @ Work, Amex is positioning the payment method within workflows companies already rely on for day-to-day financial operations.
How Businesses Can Use the Cards
The virtual cards can be deployed for supplier payments, routine business purchases, and travel-related expenses.
Companies can also issue the cards to authorised users who don't carry traditional Corporate Cards — including contractors, interns, and company guests.
American Express said administrators can apply spending limits, set validity windows, and restrict use by country or merchant category code through the @ Work interface.
Conferma Partnership for Travel Payments
In a parallel move, American Express is extending virtual card access to customers using its Business Travel Account with Virtual Payments, a centrally billed account designed for corporate travel expenses.
These customers can now create and manage Amex Virtual Cards through solutions from Conferma, which serves as a third-party token facilitator.
The Conferma setup includes spending controls, enhanced transaction data, customisable reporting, and digital receipt capture via mobile app, according to American Express.
Current Availability and Rollout Plans
Amex Virtual Cards in @ Work are currently available to select US-based Corporate Programme customers, with broader availability planned for the future.

Why Virtual Cards Matter for Commercial Payments
Eva Reda, executive vice president of global commercial services products at American Express, said companies are looking for simpler payment methods that don't sacrifice oversight.
Businesses want to simplify how they pay for things while maintaining control and visibility into spending across employee expenses, supplier payments and business travel.
Virtual cards can help solve many of these challenges, which is why we're making it easier for customers to create and manage them in the software and digital wallets they're already using while preserving the trust, security and service our customers expect from Amex.
