Microsoft rolled out Project Perception on Monday, a security platform that deploys AI agents to counter threats from attackers who themselves use artificial intelligence. The system coordinates three distinct agent teams that work together in a continuous loop.

Red team agents scan for weaknesses before adversaries can exploit them. Blue team agents investigate alerts and determine which risks warrant action. Green team agents implement fixes and reinforce protections across the network.

"Effective defense requires continuous understanding of how an attacker sees the world, how a defender evaluates risk and how protections are improved over time," the company explained in its announcement.

Multi-Model Strategy Balances Performance and Cost

The platform relies on a multi-model architecture that blends frontier AI models with specialized cybersecurity models. Microsoft said it optimizes each security task for both quality and cost efficiency.

The company committed to delivering the best-suited model for each defensive function, including proprietary models developed specifically for security workflows. This approach lets the system adapt its computational resources based on the complexity of each threat scenario.

Continuous Learning System Adapts to Changing Threats

Beyond agents and models, Project Perception integrates signals from sensors across the environment, contextual security data, a coordination harness that orchestrates the agents, and actuators that translate decisions into active protections.

These components form what Microsoft described as a closed-loop learning system. It continuously assesses risk, adjusts to shifting conditions, and improves outcomes over time without manual intervention.

Strategic Shift Toward AI Security Products

The launch follows a broader reorganization of Microsoft's cybersecurity division. Reports from mid-July indicated the company was scaling back traditional security offerings while expanding its AI-focused product line and consolidating engineering teams.

The restructuring aims to meet customer demand for defenses against AI-powered attacks and to compete with security solutions from Anthropic and OpenAI, both of which have attracted enterprise spending in this space.

Industry Impact on Fraud Prevention

AI-driven security tools are already delivering measurable returns for financial institutions. A recent PYMNTS Intelligence report found that 42% of card issuers saved more than $5 million from prevented fraud attempts in recent years thanks to AI systems.
