Payment failures now affect roughly one in five eCommerce transactions worldwide, draining about $47 billion in annual revenue. In the United States alone, merchants forfeit approximately $157 billion every year because of false declines — legitimate purchases blocked by overly cautious fraud filters or payment routing issues.
The customer impact is equally stark: around 42% of shoppers abandon their carts entirely after a payment fails, often migrating to a competitor rather than retrying the transaction.
From Separate Silos to Unified Decision Engines
Merchants have traditionally managed authorization, fraud screening, payment routing, and processing costs as independent functions. Fraud teams tuned risk rules, payments teams negotiated with acquirers, finance departments tracked fees, and engineering teams optimised checkout flows.
That model breaks down as commerce splinters across cards, digital wallets, account-to-account transfers, local payment methods, multiple acquirers, and real-time rails. The challenge is no longer simply moving money — it's choosing, in milliseconds, how each transaction should move, which credentials to deploy, where to route it, and how much risk to accept.
Optimising one variable in isolation often worsens overall performance. Routing a payment to a particular acquirer might lift approval rates but inflate processing fees. Tightening a fraud rule could curb losses while simultaneously rejecting high-value customers. Sending payments through a local provider may boost acceptance in one market yet underperform elsewhere.
Orchestration Platforms Deliver Measurable Gains
August research from PYMNTS Intelligence, conducted with PayPal Open, found that 69% of companies using core orchestration capabilities — including automated routing, account updater services, and network tokens — achieve approval rates above 97%. By contrast, only 32% of firms relying on manual routing reach that threshold.
Even incremental improvements matter at scale. Lifting an enterprise merchant's approval rate from 92% to 96% can recover millions of dollars in sales without acquiring a single new customer.
As a result, payments infrastructure is ascending the corporate strategy ladder. Next-generation platforms function less like transaction processors and more like decision engines, continuously balancing three objectives: maximising approvals, minimising costs, and controlling risk.
Fraud Prevention Shifts to Safe Approval
Anti-fraud measures drive customer churn at 56% of US retailers and 54% of eCommerce businesses, according to the report. Meanwhile, 85% of American merchants identified preventing fraud without damaging the customer experience as their foremost challenge.
The objective is evolving: rather than simply blocking more fraud, systems now focus on determining which transactions can safely be approved. AI-driven risk models are moving closer to the authorisation layer, where behavioural signals, network data, and purchase history inform real-time decisions instead of static rules applied in isolation from payment performance.
