Klarna unveiled the Klarna Shopping Search app for ChatGPT on Wednesday, embedding commerce functionality directly into OpenAI's conversational interface. The integration allows shoppers to describe what they need in plain language, then view visual product results with current prices and stock status from multiple retailers — all without leaving the chat.

The app taps into Klarna's Product Search MCP server, which connects ChatGPT to a catalogue of more than 100 million products and 400 million merchant listings spanning 13 markets. When users find an item they want, Klarna redirects them to the merchant's site to complete checkout.

Traffic From AI Platforms Surged Nearly 700% Last Holiday Season

The rollout responds to a measurable shift in how consumers discover products. Klarna reported that traffic from AI platforms to retail sites jumped almost 700% during the 2025 holiday season, with those shoppers converting at rates 31% higher than average.

The company is betting that more consumers will skip traditional search engines and retail homepages in favour of AI-assisted discovery — a trend that collapses the gap between asking for advice and making a purchase.

Closing the Gap Between Query and Checkout

One persistent friction point in AI commerce has been the handoff: shoppers ask a chatbot for recommendations, then open browser tabs to compare retailers, verify pricing, and check inventory. Klarna's integration aims to condense that workflow into a single session.

By surfacing real-time availability and pricing within the conversation, the app removes the need to context-switch between platforms. The result is a more fluid path from question to purchase decision.

A New Front Door for Retailers

For merchants, the app creates a fresh entry point into the shopping journey. Brands can appear in organic search results based on relevance, while clearly labelled sponsored placements will also be available.
