WhatsApp Adds Bill Payment Feature in India Through BBPS Network

Meta is introducing a bill payment capability on WhatsApp in India, enabling users to discover, manage, and settle household and utility bills without leaving the messaging app.

The feature connects to the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network, giving users access to 22,722 billers spanning 30 different categories. Bill types include electricity, gas, water, FASTag toll payments, insurance premiums, credit card bills, and loan repayments.

The rollout will happen in stages across India, with Meta expecting the service to reach all Android and iOS users within the coming weeks.

Arun Srinivas, Meta's country head and managing director for India, positioned the feature as an extension of WhatsApp's existing service ecosystem.

For millions of Indians, WhatsApp is already the simplest way to stay close to family and friends, talk to businesses, access citizen services, and buy everything from metro tickets to insurance – all without leaving the app.

With Bill payments, we're bringing that same simplicity to one of the most routine tasks in every household. No more juggling apps or tracking multiple due dates. We want to make paying a bill on WhatsApp as effortless as sending a message, and help bring the convenience of digital payments to people across the remotest parts of the country.

Users can access the bill payment service by tapping the rupee icon at the top of the WhatsApp home screen. From there, they select a bill category and specific biller, enter and verify account details, then review the retrieved bill amount and other information before finalising payment.

The service accepts payment through UPI, debit cards, and credit cards. Meta designed the feature to support multiple accounts under a single biller, allowing users to track and pay bills for different addresses or family members served by the same provider.

India represents WhatsApp's largest market globally, with more than 850 million users according to The New Indian Express.

WhatsApp Pay processed more than 167 million transactions in July alone, totalling Rs 129.57bn ($1.37bn) in value.
