Scale of the Incident

The platform temporarily halted all deposits and withdrawals while security teams investigate a breach estimated to affect $6.3 billion in assets. Working alongside industry partners, the exchange has identified and frozen roughly $3 billion in affected holdings so far.

Company officials emphasised that customer funds remain secure despite the incident. The exchange operates a dedicated insurance fund specifically designed to cover losses from security breaches.

Market Impact

News of the breach triggered widespread selling across cryptocurrency markets during Asian trading hours, Reuters reported. Bitcoin dropped more than 3% to $76,368, marking its weakest price in six weeks, while Ether fell by a similar margin to $2,178, a two-month low.

The exchange's native token BNB declined 5% over 24 hours to $709.70, according to data from CoinGecko cited by the news agency.

How the Attack Happened

Early findings suggest the intrusion originated with a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. The attacker leveraged this initial access to infiltrate internal systems and execute unauthorised withdrawals.

We have found no evidence of any wallet private key leak. We will share a detailed technical post-mortem once the investigation is complete and the facts are fully verified, the statement said.

Remediation Plan

The platform intends to cover all losses through its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and corporate reserves. Management committed to publishing updated proof-of-reserves documentation once remediation work concludes.

The exchange reported 335 million registered users globally and approximately $162.8 billion in assets under custody in its 2025 annual report.

Industry Context

Industry observers noted the reported incident could rank among the largest cryptocurrency thefts on record.

Binance.US, which operates as a separate legal entity from the main platform, confirmed it was not affected by the breach. Rival exchange Coinbase similarly stated it remained unaffected and was monitoring the situation.
