Checkout.com Enters Physical Retail After 14 Years Online-Only

Strategic Shift After 14 Years

Checkout.com is entering the in-person payments market after spending its entire 14-year history processing only online transactions. The expansion responds to sustained demand from merchants who want the company's infrastructure to work at physical point-of-sale.

The move follows the company's recent announcement of sustained profitability and growing margins, providing capital to invest in new segments. Checkout.com is on track to process $480 billion in global ecommerce payments in 2026.

Mollie Partnership Powers Rollout

The company is partnering with Mollie, an Amsterdam-based payments platform serving 350,000 business clients across Europe. The arrangement combines Mollie's proprietary payment terminals and point-of-sale software with Checkout.com's acquiring infrastructure.

Under the partnership, Mollie retains control of its hardware strategy and customer experience while using Checkout.com's processing capabilities to handle in-person transactions. Mollie specialises in simplifying payments for small and medium-sized enterprises across online and physical channels.

Hardware-Agnostic Approach

Checkout.com's new offering takes a device-agnostic approach, meaning the payments software isn't locked to a single terminal or hardware provider. The modular platform lets merchants connect to terminals they already own or select hardware that fits their operations.

This flexibility contrasts with traditional point-of-sale systems that bundle software and hardware from a single vendor. Merchants can maintain existing infrastructure while gaining access to Checkout.com's global acquiring network.

Rollout Timeline and Markets

The in-person payments platform will initially launch in the UK and European Economic Area, followed by the United States. Additional markets and capabilities are planned for 2027.

This expansion follows our earlier announcement of sustained profitability and growing margins, giving us the capacity to invest in new technologies and segments. Our merchants know Checkout.com for our speed, reliability and pace of innovation, and they asked us to bring that to in-person payments. Our job is to go where they need us most.

The company has built global payments infrastructure that connects directly to card networks, processing transactions across multiple regions in under half a second. Over the past year, Checkout.com has launched more than 150 merchant-facing features.
