Acquisition Brings Spreadsheet Capabilities to Enterprise AI
Data and artificial intelligence company Databricks announced Thursday it has acquired Row Zero, a spreadsheet builder designed for collaborative data work between humans and AI agents.
The deal will integrate Row Zero's spreadsheet capabilities into Genie, Databricks' AI coworker platform. This integration aims to provide business teams with a familiar spreadsheet interface for turning data into actionable insights.
Row Zero's technology offers compatibility with major spreadsheet formats, secure connections to leading data platforms, and high-speed performance when handling large datasets.
Why Databricks Needs Spreadsheet Functionality
Patrick Wendell, co-founder and vice president of engineering at Databricks, explained the strategic fit of the acquisition.
As more finance, operations and go-to-market teams adopt Genie, incorporating a seamless spreadsheet experience is a must-have. We're super excited to bring the Row Zero team to Databricks, helping us continue to evolve Genie's capabilities to become the go-to AI coworker for every enterprise team.
The spreadsheet interface addresses the needs of business users who rely on this format for financial modeling, operational planning, and market analysis.
Integration Plans and Continued Support
The Row Zero team will join Databricks to continue developing Genie's feature set. Despite the acquisition, Row Zero will maintain compatibility with data sources beyond the Databricks ecosystem.
Row Zero founder and CEO Breck Fresen said joining Databricks advances the company's mission.
Joining Databricks accelerates our vision of giving business users the spreadsheet they deserve: secure, connected, scalable and deeply integrated with AI agents.
Recent Funding Round Fuels AI Agent Development
Databricks raised $5 billion in August at a $190 billion valuation. The company earmarked the capital for continued development of Genie and other products that provide the infrastructure, context, intelligent routing, and cost management required for enterprise AI agent deployment.
Co-founder and CEO Ali Ghodsi cited strong investor interest as validation of the company's AI strategy.
The tremendous investor demand for this round shows that our AI strategy is winning the market and building what every business needs to maximize their impact with agents.
Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions
The Row Zero deal continues Databricks' acquisition activity focused on AI capabilities. In August, the company brought on the team from Electric, an agent platform provider.
Earlier in June, Databricks announced plans to acquire Panther, an AI security operations center, further expanding its enterprise AI portfolio.
