Equifax UK Rolls Out Real-Time AML Watchlist Screening for Regulated Firms

What Equifax Built

Equifax UK has introduced Automatic Watchlist Monitoring (AWM), a compliance tool that continuously screens customer portfolios against sanctions lists, politically exposed persons registers, and adverse media sources. The product was developed in partnership with data provider NOTO and targets regulated businesses in financial services, insurance, and gaming.

The system delivers screening capabilities via a single API, paired with a centralised case management dashboard. According to the bureau, AWM replaces periodic manual checks with ongoing automated monitoring, generating an audit trail designed to meet supervisory expectations under UK anti-money laundering rules.

Configurable Risk Thresholds

Clients can set match thresholds based on their own risk appetite, addressing a common challenge in automated screening: balancing sensitivity against false-positive volume. Higher sensitivity detects more potential risks but creates greater case management workload. Configurable rules allow compliance teams to adjust that trade-off.

Equifax said the solution uses "millions of detailed and up-to-date risk profiles" derived from anonymised data. The company did not publish independent accuracy metrics, false-positive rates, or name any firms currently using the tool.

Stephen Adams, principal consultant for identity and fraud risk at Equifax UK, said the product expands the bureau's offerings by "replacing time-consuming manual checks with an intelligent, automated, real-time solution to enable our clients to onboard customers faster and reduce operational burdens in an increasingly complex regulatory environment."

Regulatory Pressure Driving Demand

The launch arrives during a period of heightened AML enforcement in the UK. The Financial Conduct Authority has repeatedly flagged weaknesses in ongoing customer monitoring in enforcement actions against regulated firms. The Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 expanded corporate criminal liability for failure to prevent fraud.

Gaming firms face parallel pressure. The Gambling Commission has tightened source-of-funds and customer interaction requirements, increasing demand for automated screening tools.

Across Europe, the EU's Anti-Money Laundering Regulation entered force in 2024 and takes effect mid-2027, introducing a single rulebook and a new EU AML Authority to supervise high-risk entities. UK firms with EU operations must navigate both frameworks, strengthening the case for unified screening infrastructure.

Competitive Landscape

The automated AML screening market includes established providers such as LexisNexis Risk Solutions, Refinitiv World-Check, and ComplyAdvantage, all offering real-time watchlist and adverse media capabilities at scale.

Equifax's differentiation lies in integration with its broader identity and fraud stack, plus its FCA-authorised status. That regulatory status gives UK-regulated clients a counterparty within the same supervisory perimeter.

The practical test will be whether configurable rules and the NOTO data partnership deliver a material performance advantage over tools already embedded in bank and insurer compliance workflows.

Availability

AWM is available immediately for UK-regulated businesses in financial services, insurance, and gaming.
