Breaking from Traditional Card Formats
Hyundai Card has rolled out the NAVER Hyundai Card Edition3, a credit card series created in collaboration with CEKAI, a New York and Tokyo-based creative collective. The series departs from conventional flat card designs by incorporating 3D motion graphics directly onto the physical card plate.
CEKAI brought its expertise in 3D billboard design — previously used for brands including Nike, BMW and Fendi — to the project. The partnership began in mid-2025 with discussions about reimagining the credit card format.
How the Partnership Worked
Hyundai Card took responsibility for material selection, packaging decisions and ensuring physical feasibility, drawing on its existing card design experience. NAVER, the Korean technology company, established the overall design direction based on its brand identity.
Within the framework set by Hyundai Card and NAVER, CEKAI was given creative freedom over the card design itself. The collaboration resulted in three distinct plate options: two in plastic and one in metal.
Manufacturing the 3D Effects
Hyundai Card's Design Lab converted the creative concepts into physical products using specialised techniques. For the metal plate, the team applied laser methods to highlight fine particle details. The plastic plates received special films to accentuate the graphic elements and create the motion effect.
The Three Card Designs
The series comprises three cards, each with a distinct visual theme:
- Plus represents the benefits of NAVER Plus Membership
- Neo employs colour gradients and geometric graphics to convey futuristic energy
- Logo Metal features the NAVER logo with motion graphic design cues that create an appearance of movement
Industry Perspective on Card Evolution
Kota Iguchi, CEKAI's creative director and motion designer, commented on the project's broader implications.
Currently, credit cards exist as physical plates, but we can easily imagine a future where they evolve into digital displays or take on entirely different forms. This project was incredibly exciting because of those diverse possibilities. I hope NAVER Hyundai Card members can feel that potential as well.
A Hyundai Card spokesperson emphasised the partnership's role in expanding the issuer's design capabilities.
This collaboration with CEKAI provided an excellent opportunity to expand the creative universe of Hyundai Card's design. We will continue our efforts to ensure the NAVER Hyundai Card is recognised not only for its premier financial benefits but also as a highly coveted item for its cutting-edge design.
