Mox Bank Launches Digital Home Insurance in Hong Kong with QBE

Product Details and Coverage

Mox Bank has introduced Home Cushion Insurance, a digital-first home insurance offering accessible through its mobile app and underwritten by QBE Hongkong and Shanghai Insurance Limited. The product targets renters, owner-occupiers, and landlords across Hong Kong, bundling building structures, home contents, and third-party liability into one policy. Optional extras include pet accommodation and relocation expenses.

Available in three tiers — Basic, Value, and Max — the policy provides up to HKD 1,500,000 in home contents coverage and HKD 100,000 for building structures, with third-party liability reaching up to HKD 10,000,000. A standout feature is its replacement-as-new claims settlement, which reimburses eligible home contents at full replacement value without depreciation deductions. Relocation protection covers both the old and new home simultaneously for up to 28 days, plus transit cover of up to 15 per cent of the insured sum.

Expansion of Mox Insure Suite

Home Cushion Insurance becomes the fourth insurance offering launched within the Mox Insure platform and the third distinct product category, joining Personal Accident Cushion and Travel Pick and Go. The digital bank has rolled out four products with QBE in approximately 12 months, signaling a focused push into wealth protection — a segment where digital banks globally have struggled to achieve scale and profitability. Mox operates as a licensed insurance agent (licence number GA1073) rather than an insurer, distributing products via an exclusive partnership with QBE Hong Kong.

Philip Wong, chief commercial officer of Mox, stated that customers expect wealth management and protection to be "seamless, intuitive, and entirely digital", and that insurance should meet the same benchmark. Lei Yu, CEO of QBE North Asia, highlighted that the home insurance launch represents the fourth joint initiative with Mox in their first year of collaboration.

Competitive Landscape in Hong Kong

Hong Kong's insurtech and embedded-finance sectors are crowded. Multiple digital banking licensees, including ZA Bank and WeLab Bank, have entered insurance distribution as a strategy to strengthen customer engagement and diversify revenue streams beyond deposits and lending. Traditional retail banks already dominate the bancassurance model in Hong Kong, giving them established insurer relationships and extensive distribution footprints that virtual banks must compete against.

Digital banks may possess a structural edge through embedded insurance: in-app enrollment with pre-filled data and no paperwork can reduce friction at the point of sale. Whether these advantages convert to significantly higher attachment rates than branch-based or broker-led channels remains unproven across the industry.

Regulatory Framework and Oversight

Hong Kong's Insurance Authority actively licenses insurers and agents operating through digital distribution. The IA Levy framework, applicable to all eligible policies, introduces a modest cost component that Mox discloses in product documentation. The Financial Dispute Resolution Scheme covers disputes arising from the sales process, while contractual disagreements are resolved directly between policyholders and QBE — a standard split for agent-distributed products but one that customers unfamiliar with this structure should note.

Mox Bank Market Position

Backed by Standard Chartered, PCCW, HKT, and Trip.com, Mox launched in September 2020 and now holds the seventh-largest credit card portfolio among Hong Kong retail banks by portfolio size, according to TransUnion data for the first half of 2026. The bank's technology infrastructure has also been deployed at Trust Bank in Singapore, indicating broader regional ambitions beyond its insurance product expansion.
