Pinterest Launches AI Beauty Guides to Turn Inspiration Into Salon Instructions

Pinterest introduced Beauty Guides on Tuesday (Oct. 6), an artificial intelligence tool that transforms saved hair and nail images into step-by-step instructions users can take to salons or follow at home.

The feature combines the platform's visual recognition technology with large language models to analyze styling details like hair color, nail shape, and finish. It then generates practical guidance including what to request at appointments, similar looks to explore, relevant products, and how to recreate the style independently.

The company said the tool addresses a common problem in beauty discovery: people often recognize what they want visually but struggle to articulate it in words. Beauty Guides bridge that gap by interpreting images and converting visual inspiration into actionable information.

People come to Pinterest with a point of view, even if they don't know the words to describe it, said Matt Madrigal, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Pinterest. > Beauty Guides use our visual understanding technology and AI to help people go from seeing a look they love to knowing how to make it their own, whether that means knowing what to ask for at the salon, finding the right products or recreating the look at home.

The launch accompanies Pinterest's first Beauty Trend Report, which offers data on how users discover and engage with beauty trends, products, and brands across the platform.

The greater technical challenge was building this capability without creating another endless scroll feed. Pinterest designed its AI to guide users toward genuine inspiration rather than maximize screen time, embedding trust and safety mechanisms into the technology from the outset rather than adding them as an afterthought.
