DITC Labs Launches Trustnet Initiative to Build Universal Internet Trust Layer

DITC Labs, a digital economy think tank founded by NFCW creator Sarah Clark, has unveiled the Trustnet — an initiative aimed at establishing a universal trust layer atop today's internet infrastructure.

The project centres on a novel standardisable mechanism designed to give consumers simpler, safer ways to interact online while enabling businesses to develop trust-based business models previously out of reach.

The first phase will use a high-level blueprint developed by DITC Labs as the starting point for a standards-setting process led by a cross-industry expert panel that DITC Labs will convene and coordinate.

Organisations can participate through an early access programme granting members priority viewing of candidate specifications, research briefings, and business model frameworks before public release. Participants will also receive first access to sandbox and pilot opportunities.

The initial deliverable — Blueprint for a Universal Layer of Trust, Part One — will be released under NDA in September and is available to pre-order now.

The report introduces the mechanism making the Trustnet possible and explains the rationale behind the concept. It details the problems the system addresses, demonstrates how it will enable safer consumer experiences, and examines opportunities for trust-based business models.

The document is designed to give executives and technical specialists the foundation needed to evaluate the Trustnet's potential, assess relevance to their organisations, and determine how they might engage with the next stage.

Companies wanting to shape the Trustnet directly can join DITC Labs as corporate members. Membership allows participation in the specification-setting process, influence over emerging certification frameworks, and direct contribution to the governance and implementation infrastructure required for a standards-based rollout.

Part one of the blueprint is available to pre-order at £995 (approximately $1,333 or €1,167) until 31 July. The price will rise to £1,995 for orders placed before publication and £3,995 after the September release.
