Extend Launches AI Receipt Agent for Automated Expense Matching

How the Receipt Agent Works

Extend, a financial operations platform specialising in spend and expense management, has launched its AI Receipt Agent to streamline back-office workflows for businesses. The tool automatically matches receipts to card transactions whilst maintaining human oversight at every decision point.

The agent connects directly to employees' Gmail or Outlook accounts to search for and retrieve receipts, applying the same security and access controls already protecting company spend data. Finance teams review explainable matches showing what the AI paired and why, then approve or correct results as needed.

Trust Through Transparency

Extend designed the Receipt Agent in collaboration with finance teams, prioritising transparency over speed. The company aims to make AI accessible to small and mid-market businesses without sacrificing control over sensitive financial data.

Every business owner we talk to wants AI to take the tedious work off their plate, and every one of them also wants to know exactly what it's doing with their data, CEO and Co-Founder Andrew Jamison said. > We don't think those two things are in conflict.

Jamison emphasised the company's deliberate approach to AI deployment, stating that earning trust requires starting with routine tasks where automation results are easy to verify.

Pilot Programme and Rollout

The Receipt Agent is currently in pilot with businesses ranging from small firms to enterprise clients. Extend plans to broaden availability throughout the remainder of the year.

The company works directly with its bank partners to integrate AI capabilities into business banking offerings, concentrating initially on workflows where automation delivers clear benefits and outcomes are straightforward to validate.

In finance, trust is earned with the boring stuff first, Jamison noted. > The technology to automate far more of this work already exists. What's harder is earning the right to be trusted with it.

Extend Platform and Reach

Headquartered in New York, Extend debuted at FinovateSpring 2019. The platform enables businesses to create and manage virtual cards, streamline payment workflows, and gain real-time visibility into team and vendor spending.

Extend currently processes billions of dollars in transaction volume and serves more than 10,000 business customers. The company positions itself as a solution for firms seeking automated expense management without sacrificing financial control.
