Credit Unions Back Technology They Already Use
Voice authentication specialist Illuma has closed an undisclosed funding round led by three of its existing partners: Financial Plus Credit Union, Dort Financial Credit Union, and CUSO One Washington Financial.
The investment marks a shift from traditional vendor relationships, with clients taking equity positions in technology they consider essential to their operations. According to Crunchbase, the company has now raised at least $11.5 million in disclosed funding across multiple rounds since its 2016 founding, with four additional rounds of undisclosed amounts including this latest raise.
Strengthening Deepfake Detection and Enterprise Readiness
The new capital will advance several areas of Illuma's platform:
- Enhanced deepfake detection capabilities
- Layered security features
- Support for additional platforms
- Enterprise-grade reliability improvements
- Commercial expansion across credit unions and community banks
Investment from institutions that use our technology every day is a powerful expression of confidence in what we are building, said founder and CEO Dr. Milind Borkar.
Passive Authentication Stops AI Voice Fraud
Illuma's IllumaSHIELD product uses passive voice biometrics to verify legitimate account holders within seconds while flagging AI-generated voices, deepfakes, and account takeover attempts in real time.
The platform combines adaptive multi-factor authentication, deepfake detection, and human-AI collaborative intelligence to protect call center operations without adding customer friction. For Financial Plus Credit Union, the technology has delivered faster authentication, fewer escalations to supervisors, and improved identification of fraudulent callers.
Illuma has proven that its technology can simplify member interactions while strengthening security, said Financial Plus SVP and Chief Innovation Officer Jessica McNier.
AI-Generated Voices Outpace Traditional Security
Smaller banks and credit unions face mounting pressure as generative AI makes synthetic voices increasingly difficult to distinguish from real customers. Many community institutions lack the resources to develop advanced fraud detection in-house, making specialized fintech partnerships critical.
The ability to authenticate customers without degrading the experience is becoming a competitive differentiator as voice fraud techniques grow more sophisticated. Illuma's approach addresses this challenge by layering passive biometric verification with AI-powered threat detection.
Platform Wins Best of Show and Fast Growth Awards
Illuma earned Best of Show at FinovateSpring 2025 for its deepfake detection technology. The company has also received the Tech Titans Emerging Company Innovation Award and ranked number seven on the Fast Tech List of North Texas's fastest-growing technology firms.
The platform is a finalist in the Product Innovation — Advances in AI category for the Credit Union Partners segment of the 2026 Credit Union Times Luminaries Awards.
